This explains what personal data clearphysics collects, why, who it is shared with, and what you can ask us to do about it. It is written to be read rather than skimmed past.
1. Who is responsible

2. What we collect, and why

We do not ask for, or hold, your name, school, age, or payment card details. Card details go directly to Square and never reach us. We never see your password, because there isn't one — you sign in with a link sent to your email.
Your revision progress stays on your device
Which topics you have ticked off, your quiz answers and your mock exam are stored in your own browser, not on our servers. We cannot see them, and we cannot restore them if you clear your browser data or switch device.
3. Written answers and the AI tutor
Please do not type personal information into a written answer or to the tutor. What you write is sent to Anthropic, our AI provider, so that it can be marked or answered. There is no reason to include your name, school or contact details in a physics answer, and we would rather you did not.
To keep marking fast and affordable, the marker's verdict is cached for up to 30 days, stored against a one-way fingerprint of your answer rather than the answer itself. Identical answers to the same question then get the same mark without being sent again.
4. Who we share it with
We use these companies to run the service. Each processes data only on our instructions, and none of them sells it.

5. Sending data outside the UK
Some of the companies above are based outside the UK. We have tried to keep your data as close to home as we sensibly can, and here is exactly where it goes.
Your account and our emails stay in the European Union
Your email address, purchase record and daily reading total are held by Supabase in Ireland. Our emails are sent through Resend, also in Ireland. The UK Government has decided the EU offers an adequate level of protection, so no additional safeguard is needed for these.
Payments and AI marking involve the United States
Square processes your payment, and Anthropic marks written answers and powers the tutor. Both are United States companies, so data reaching them leaves the UK. For these transfers we rely on the International Data Transfer Addendum to the European Commission's standard contractual clauses — the safeguard UK law provides for countries without an adequacy decision.
The same applies to Google, which supplies the typefaces the page is set in and therefore sees your IP address when the page loads.
6. How long we keep it

7. Cookies and browser storage
We set no advertising or analytics cookies, and we do not track you across other websites. There is nothing to consent to, because nothing here is used for marketing.
The site does store a few things in your own browser, all of them necessary for it to work: your sign-in session, your revision progress and quiz answers, your mock exam in progress, and — on the free version — how long you have read today. Clearing your browser data removes all of it and signs you out.
8. Your rights
Under UK GDPR you can ask us to:
- give you a copy of the personal data we hold about you;
- correct anything that is wrong;
- delete your data — though we must keep purchase records for the tax period above;
- restrict or object to how we use it;
- send your data to you, or to someone else, in a portable form; and
- withdraw consent, where we relied on consent.
Email [email protected] and we will respond within one month, as the law requires. There is no charge.
Deleting your account
Ask us and we will delete your account, your email address and your daily totals. Because your revision progress lives in your own browser, clearing your browser data removes that part yourself.
9. Children
clearphysics is aimed at A-level students, so many of our users are 16 or 17. We only ever collect an email address and the minimum needed to run the service, and we do not profile users or advertise to them. If you are under 13, please do not create an account.
10. Complaints
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, please tell us first at [email protected] so we can try to put it right.
You also have the right to complain to the UK's data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner's Office, at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or on 0303 123 1113.
11. Changes
If we change how we use your data we will update this page and change the date at the top. If the change matters to you, we will email you about it.
